Library Policies

The library is open and available at all times to all students during school hours.  Classes come to the library either two or three times a week.  Friday's schedule is on a red/black rotation for fifth graders.  The first day a class comes in will be their check out day. The second day will be silent reading and/or story time.  The third visit will be used for free reading, a library lesson, or some other activity.

Kindergarten teachers will check out books for their individual classes to keep in the classroom.  The  students will have the opportunity to look at books during their library time and stories will be read to them. They will not check out books themselves.

Check out -- First and second grade students are allowed to check out one book at a time and are allowed to take the books home. The students may visit the library at any time to check out another book.  Books are checked out for 10 days.  First graders are not charged fines for overdue books.  Second grade students will be charged five cents perday per item excluding weekends, holidays and excused absences.  Books must be presented before fine money will be accepted.  Students will pay damage fines, and the fine amount will be determined by the librarian.  Students must pay for lost or severely damaged books.  Parents will be notified when a student has lost or damaged a book.  If the lost book is found and is in good shape, a full refund will be given.  First and second grade students begin the Accelerated Reader program.  AR requirements are set by the homeroom teachers.

Third, fourth and fifth grade students are allowed to check out two books at a time.  The students may visit the library at any time to check out additional books after returning some books.  Books are checked out for 10 days but may be rechecked.  If a student needs to recheck a book, he must bring the book to the library.  Fines are charged for overdue books.  Five cents per day per item will be levied, excluding weekends, holidays, and excused absences. Books must be presented before fine money will be accepted.  If students forget books, students are given a grace period of three days before fines are assessed.  Students will pay damage fines, and the fine amount will be determined by the librarian.  Students must pay for lost or severely damaged books.  Parents will be notified when a student has lost or damaged a book.   Third, fourth, and fifth grade students continue with the Accelerated Reader program.  AR requirements are set by the homeroom or reading teachers.

Reference books and periodicals must be used in the library by students,  but teachers are permitted to check them out for classroom use.  Only faculty members are allowed to check out nonprint materials.

Language and descriptive scenes -- Books that have been given a reading level of 4.0 and above may contain inappropriate language and more vivid descriptions of scenes.  Book reviews do not give this type of information.  As the librarian, I do my best to purchase appropriate reading material for your students.  If there is a concern about a book, please let me know.
